Innovation Centers for Open Education

Within the OpenMed project and with the support of the European Union, it has been possible to establish 8 “Innovation Centres for Open Education” (ICOEs) at the premises of South-Mediterranean partner universities in Egypt, Morocco, Palestine and Jordan.

The OpenMed ICOEs are open, collaborative, and networked innovation centres, where technical and networking infrastructure is available to university students, teachers and staff with the aim to enhance new and open practices in teaching and learning.

The aim of the ICOEs is therefore to support learning innovation, blended teaching practices, and faculty members who are in search of better (and more open) ways to facilitate learning. ICOEs make it possible to:

  • Increase access to OER for the involved HEI’s stakeholders (teachers, staff, students)
  • develop and share teachers’ own OER (with the competences and knowledge gained by attending the OpenMed online course)
  • facilitate adoption of open education strategies in teachers’ courses
  • enhance collaboration with teachers and staff of other universities inside and outside the OpenMed network to jointly develop/share/use/re-use OER in their teaching practices.

The OpenMed ICOEs network plays a key role in the sustainability of OpenMed, as it provides the operational environment to concretise the OER institutional agendas and roadmaps.
